The history of art and design has exhibited an effort to homogenize the ethical (good), aesthetic (beautiful), logical (correct) and pragmatic (useful) shaping processes. In addition to the basic understanding of art such as pushing the possibilities and determining its own boundaries; the reasons for the motive to characterize the combination of science, art and philosophy according to the feedbacks of time and space have also been considered important. At the beginning of the 21st century, our country's view of art as well as the whole world's view of art has undergone/is about to undergo a major change with the transformation of the perception of space by designs that are parallel to all scopes of visual culture, and the criteria related to space and time include more new references to the concept and identity of the work of art.
The goal of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Fine Arts will be to reveal the potentials that can contribute to new cultural and artistic contents and orientations, as well as to reveal the potentials that can give direction and develop perspectives, as well as to reflect the dynamics that will make these potentials additional to performances in proportion to its capacity. It aims to combine the art and culture-oriented past of our country, our region and our city with future perspectives and to determine a brand new art-design policy and to evaluate options that coincide with other local and global goals.
Ceramics, as one of the rare branches of art and design that can carry the contact of fire and earth as one of the most meaningful inventions of history, and glass art, which has formed the basis for aesthetics, elegance and artistry of all eras, arouses interest with its identity as a sector that is widely spread in many regions of Anatolia. It should be emphasized that both materials are at the center of art and art education with their identity of being the basic material of contemporary art and design phenomenon as well as traditional.
Ceramics is the science and technology of shaping the compositions of all inorganic materials other than metals and metal alloys and firing them until they gain durability. From the first ceramic productions to the present day, ceramic terminology is spread over a wide area due to the diversity of production purposes and production methods and takes place in the fields of handicrafts, art, science and technology. Ceramic art continues its existence by developing from the first productions that started in prehistoric times to the present day with its production methods, production purposes and the cultural dimension they carry. In this development process, it has also carried universal and local features in its structure.
Glass is a transparent, fragile, amorphous (semi-regular), high-tech product with a transparent, fragile, amorphous (semi-regular) structure, which is melted at high temperatures from mixtures of raw materials considered inorganic and rapidly shaped and cooled at room temperature. Today, glass is still produced by traditional hand manufacturing methods (blowing method) that require skill as it was thousands of years ago. Glass production is developed in Istanbul Denizli Sinop Kütahya İzmir Antalya Eskişehir Konya and there is a need for trained intermediate staff in the developing glass sector. Although Ceramics and Glass Departments have the opportunity to be processed with workshop equipment close to each other, the methods of both traditional materials may contain differences in terms of artistic formations thanks to technologies that will support new methods and applications. Therefore, the two materials can be evaluated both separately and together.
Based on the interest between traditionalist and futurist art and design processes, it aims to graduate individuals with creative potentials as ceramic and glass artists at the end of an educational process that reveals their competencies that can combine their ability to observe, question, research, analyze, analyze, and then design and construct with the criteria of originality, innovation and developmentalism in order to create local and global artistic and therefore cultural awareness. In addition to original ceramic and glass artists, it envisages to train designers who have aesthetic and technical qualifications in these branches, which are necessary for the industry.
Education in the Department of Ceramics-Glass is prepared as eight (8) semesters. The first two semesters are entirely devoted to basic field courses. From the third semester to the eighth semester, in addition to the main field workshop courses, related field workshop courses have been introduced. In the process of art education, a progressive developmental (taxonomic) harmony between artistic and theoretical courses has been observed. The philosophical basis of the combination of technology, science and art was emphasized. The diversity and gradualism between the courses support the perspectives and methodologies for the development of the capacity to reveal the potentials of the individual/student.
It is aimed to standardize the artistic formation by providing the physical environment and studio conditions necessary for the transformation of artistic equipment into practices and thus experiences as professional equipment. Curricular dynamics regarding research processes in which alternative methods and experiences are encouraged, taking into account the diversity and variability of ceramic and glass workshop practices, have been observed. Graduation project development and project realization studies in the seventh and eighth semesters aim to develop the individual's/student's artistic understanding and stylistic pursuits and to gain professional experience.
In addition to the courses in the department program, seminars and conferences, work-shops, forums and exhibitions, as well as activities related to the sharing of professional experience and works of experts and artists in the field are envisaged.
